When sanding e.g. panel doors (12) in a machine, the doors are placed under six horizontal sanding spindles (10) with sanding members (11) which rotate and are moved around a vertical driving cylinder (19). The spindles (10) are mounted in such a way that they can be programmed to rotate in a given direction and if necessary be completely disengaged. Improved sanding is obtained as the doors (12) are engaged by sanding threads from many different sides thus eliminating sanding traces.
